Bonnie Gleason

Artist Bio

BONNIE GLEASON earned an additional Degree in Art, decades after graduating from college. Her love of painting finds her both taking and giving watercolor workshops. While she is a more ‘realistic painter’ who embraces a ‘painterly technique’, Bonnie enjoys exploring trial-and-error painting challenges by experimenting with new approaches. She says that her inspiration is two-fold: the innate beauty seen by the beholder and the way the light enhances or changes the mood of what one sees.

Bonnie was born in Hollywood, California, and was exposed to the theatre, dance, art, and all genres of music throughout her childhood. From Kindergarten through University, her school papers always came home adorned with doodles. A note home, from a second grade teacher, suggested that Bonnie needed to pay less attention to the view from the classroom window and focus more on her lessons.

Her award winning paintings have been featured in magazines articles and National Arts Program. Bonnie' original paintings are displayed in C.O.A.L. Gallery in Carlsbad. Hotels and gift shops carry both her greeting cards and prints.

Current professional memberships include: The National Watercolor Society, C.O.A.L. (Carlsbad Oceanside Art League) Gallery and both the National and Carlsbad Arts Associations. While she is inspired by an unending list of artists, three of her favorites are: Birgit O’Connor, G. Harvey and Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. To date, some of her most enjoyable workshop instructors include: Terry Madden, Tom Lynch, Rikki Reinholtz, Duane Light, Gerald Brommer, Cathy Quiel, David Becker, and Walter Brunning.

Artist Statement

My artistic endeavor is to express myself by capturing on canvas the inherent beauty that I see around me. I celebrate each day as a personal and visual gift. My favorite time of day is the late afternoon, with its long shadows and unfiltered light. This is the time when what we see takes on an accentuated definition, colors deepen in intensity, and water sparkles.

My painting style fluctuates from realistic to painterly. I have a deep regard for fine art and architecture. The subjects of my paintings are unquantifiable. I find elegant beauty in flowers, buildings, boats, skies and landscapes and even a musician lost in his art. Painting is like music to me, it is an unspoken lyrical inspiration. I keep a camera in my car, just in case I find an irresistible scene that might become the subject of my next painting.

My paintings, prints and greeting cards have had adventures of their own. They have won awards, been featured in magazines and found brand new and distant homes.
