COAL's Youth Program
The Youth Program is COAL’s most important program! It satisfies the League’s primary non-profit mission – promoting appreciation of fine arts and art education in the community. This mission is accomplished with a combination of Youth Art Scholarships and sponsored youth art shows.
Youth Art Scholarships
COAL awards art scholarships annually to selected high school seniors as part of its mission to encourage young talented art students. Recipients are selected from the high schools in the Carlsbad-Oceanside area.
Each spring, students submit portfolios that represent their body of work for judging by a committee appointed by the League’s Board of Directors. All committee members are established artists and/ or art educators. Submittals are judged on the basis of talent, creativity, and technical expertise. From these submittals, recipients are chosen to receive these scholarships.
High School Art Show
Each April, COAL sponsors a high school student art show held at a different venue and awards cash prizes at a reception for the show. Prizewinners from the show are subsequently exhibited at the COAL gallery during the June art show. Details about the upcoming show are posted on the home page of this site about 60 days before the show.
May Children's Art Show
Each May, COAL sponsors an art show for elementary school children at the gallery. Entries are selected from students attending local elementary schools. Ribbons and modest cash prizes are awarded at a special show reception for parents and children traditionally held on Mother's Day . Details about the upcoming show are posted on the home page of this site about 60 days before the show.
